Solvay launches new KetaSpire® PEEK grade for precision ABS/ESC brakes and electric vehicle components

Recently, Solvay announced the launch of a new grade of KetaSpire® PEEK, KT-850 SCF 30, designed for precision braking systems and electronic pump components for electric vehicles.

Carbon fiber-filled PEEK is generally used for anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) components, such as tappets, shrapnels and plungers. The new KT-850 SCF 30 grade can further replace metal (aluminum) by improving the flow characteristics of the material and the surface finish of the parts.

The ABS/ESC plunger plays a key role in the function of the hydraulic unit of the system. The system combines an electronic pump, an electronic control unit (ECU), valves to control wheel brake pressure, and sensors to measure wheel speed. The plunger is responsible for operating the movement of the valve by controlling the supply of brake fluid.

Replacing metal with polymer plungers requires materials like KetaSpire® KT-850 SCF 30, which can balance high-performance properties including coefficient of friction, mechanical strength, dimensional tolerance control, and sealing capabilities.

Replacing aluminum in precision parts such as ABS plungers can reduce overall costs and increase productivity. KetaSpire® KT-850 SCF 30 provides the fluidity required for filling parts, which are approximately 15 mm in length, while also meeting the strict tolerances required for ABS/ESC plungers. The processing performance of KetaSpire® KT-850 SCF 30 is better than that of existing materials, which greatly increases the output, improves the surface finish, and makes the sealing and mechanical properties better.

"The new carbon-filled KetaSpire® PEEK grade was launched at a critical moment when manufacturers seek to enhance sealing and mechanical performance. This means that it is a real solution for the electric vehicle market, and we are proud that it is our complete brake Part of the system`s high-performance solutions." said Brian Baleno, director of transportation marketing for Solvay’s materials division. Amodel®PPA for electronic parking brake housings; Ryton®PPS for brake pistons and valve housings, and Fomblin®PFPE for electric parking brake lubricants.

As part of Solvay's "One Earth" sustainability commitment, the company uses 100% renewable electricity when producing PEEK, PPA and PPS basic polymers in the United States, and is the only company ranked among the top 10 solar energy companies in the Solar Energy Industry Association rankings The user's manufacturing company.
