Solvay’s Udel® P-1700 PSU helps MTTS successfully develop cost-effective Bubble CPAP integrated ventilator

May 19, 2017-Solvay, the world's leading supplier of specialty polymers, today announced that its biocompatible Udel® P-1700 polysulfone (PSU) has helped MTTS Co., Ltd. in Hanoi, Vietnam to successfully develop Dolphin Bubble CPAP The ventilator realizes the unified value of the latest respiratory care technology and high cost performance. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy provides a continuous open airway, helping premature and low-birth-weight babies who can breathe spontaneously but often are not fully breathing. Solvay Udel® PSU can be used as a sterilizable alternative to disposable polymer parts for the manufacture of two injection-molded parts of MTTS ventilator: humidifier housing and CPEP system positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) cavity .

Gregory Dajer, Director of MTTS, said: "MTTS was established in 2004 to provide innovative and affordable solutions for newborns who need careful medical care. The design goal of the Dolphin CPAP system is to develop an integrated non-invasive solution that is consumable Parts can be replaced with reusable parts, making them more cost-effective. The Solvay team has contributed significantly to our R & D success, not only recommending Udel® PSU polymers for critical components, but also providing us with professional Molding knowledge and technical guidance, and related medical resistance application testing. "

The Dolphin Bubble CPAP ventilator immerses the end of the expiratory tube in water to maintain air pressure in the breathing circuit. When the airflow passes through the system, the ventilator will "bubble" to release excess air pressure. Funded by Wellcome Trust, a biomedical research charity in London, MTTS was able to develop this comfortable, reliable and easy-to-use ventilator. The ventilator integrates the gas mixer, humidifier, PEEP cavity, air compressor and pulse oximeter into a compact machine. The PEEP cavity mainly improves the oxygenation capacity by increasing the functional residual air volume, Helps improve lung compliance and reduce breathing volume, the product has been CE certified in Europe last year.

Udel® P-1700 PSU is a medical grade biocompatible polymer, which can maintain high strength and toughness after repeated 100 times of high temperature and high pressure steam sterilization, and can withstand the strong corrosive chemical disinfectants commonly used in the medical industry ( Such as: sodium hypochlorite bleach and 2.4% glutaraldehyde solution), heat resistance and hydrolytic stability are also stronger than polycarbonate, and maintain low creep performance under high temperature and continuous stress.

Jeff Hrivnak, Global Business Development Manager, Medical Unit, Solvay Specialty Polymers, said: "The MTTS integrated Dolphin CPAP system has achieved an important mission with innovative and simple solutions, and Solvay is pleased to help in its success. Udel® PSU is one of our broad portfolio of biocompatible polymers that uniquely combines performance and value to help innovators such as MTTS, solve their design challenges, and provide breakthroughs New solutions"
