South Korean university team jointly develops high-efficiency blue fluorescent material without rare earth materials

The team of Professor Kim Yun-hee from the Department of Chemistry, National Kyungsang University (GNU), and the team of Professor Kim Jang-ju from Seoul University have jointly developed a highly efficient blue delayed fluorescent material based on oxygen-bridged boron receptors without expensive rare earth metals. On the 20th of last month, it was published in the online version of the famous international academic journal "Adcance Materials" (IF: 27.398) in the materials field.

This research was carried out under the support of the backbone of the Korean Research Foundation and the development of high-efficiency and long-life blue materials. The Ph.D student Cheon Hyung Jin from the team of Professor Kim Yun-hee and Dr. Hyung-cheol Lin from the team of Professor Kim Jang-ju were the co-first authors. 

The materials introduced in the paper can emit narrow emission spectra with a half-value width (FWHM) of 55nm and 62nm and the International Commission on Illumination (CIE; Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) with color coordinates of "0.14, 0.09" and "0.14, 0.21" Blue light with high color purity and high external quantum efficiency (EQE) as high as 28.2% and 25.7%.

At present, for green and red OLED materials that have been commercialized, high-efficiency rare-earth metal-based phosphate rock materials are used, while blue, due to issues such as color purity, uses relatively low-efficiency fluorescent materials.

The blue material developed in this research, without the need for expensive rare earth metals, also exhibits high-efficiency characteristics surpassing rare earth metal materials, and at the same time has high color purity characteristics, and is considered to be a material that is worth looking forward to in the future. .
