December 2, 2019-STMicroelectronics, the world's leading semiconductor supplier across multiple electronic applications, announced on December 2 that it has completed the Swedish silicon carbide (SiC) wafer manufacturer Norstel AB ("Norstel") The overall acquisition. After the first transaction was announced in February 2019, STMicroelectronics exercised options to acquire the remaining 45% of the shares. The total price of the Norstel merger and acquisition is $ 137.5 million, which is paid in cash.
Jean-Marc Chery, President and CEO of STMicroelectronics, said: "In the global environment of limited silicon carbide production capacity, the overall acquisition of Norstel will help strengthen the SiC ecosystem within ST and increase our production flexibility. We can better control the yield and quality improvement of wafers and provide support for our long-term planning and business development of silicon carbide. Implementing this merger and acquisition and signing a wafer supply agreement with a third party, the overall goal is to guarantee our wafers Supply volume to meet the growing demand for MOSFETs and diodes for automotive and industrial customers in the next few years. "
Norstel will be fully integrated into ST's global R & D and manufacturing operations, and continue to develop 150mm silicon carbide bare wafer and epitaxial wafer production operations to develop 200mm wafers and a wider range of wide band gap materials.
