Superconducting magnet developed by Chinese superconducting materials technology enterprise arrives at ITER site in France

The reporter learned on the 29th from the Hefei Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that at 11 a.m. local time on June 26, French local time, the ITER project No. 6 superconducting coil (PF6 coil) arrived at the welcome ceremony at the international thermonuclear fusion reactor assembly site. The PF6 coil developed by the Institute of Plasma was officially delivered to the French ITER site.

The PF6 coil is one of the most important parts of the host of the ITER device. It is located at the bottom of the superconducting magnet of the ITER device. It is currently the world's most successfully developed superconducting magnet with the highest weight and the highest difficulty.

With the support of the China International Nuclear Fusion Energy Plan Implementation Center, after 6 years of independent innovation, the PF6 coil with a total weight of more than 400 tons and an outer diameter of more than 11 meters was successfully developed in 2019. It was launched in Hefei in March this year and shipped by sea. Go to the ITER site in Catrascher, southern France. In order to overcome the adverse factors such as the spread of the global new pneumonia epidemic, the severe obstruction of international logistics, and the prevention and control of personnel, PF6 has successfully reached its delivery destination recently.

At the welcome ceremony, ITER Director-General Bernard Bigot and the head of the EU Fusion Commission Johannes Schewmer praised the smooth arrival of the PF6 coil, which embodies the international fusion people in the process of fighting the epidemic together, go hand in hand, go all out to ensure the determination of the ITER project process and Goal, thank the Chinese fusion people for their important contributions in keeping watch on the ultimate dream of fusion for all mankind.

On the same day, Jean Marc, the head of the ITER department of the European Union Fusion Commission, and Wu Songtao, chief engineer of the ITER organization general assembly, attended the welcome ceremony. Song Yuntao, vice president of the Hefei Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Plasma Institute, represented the Chinese development team via video connection.

The smooth delivery of the PF6 coil has laid an important foundation for the major project node of the first plasma discharge of the ITER plan in 2025, and has a positive speed-up significance for the progress of the entire plan of the ITER.

It is reported that there is currently a Chinese fusion scientific research team with more than 100 people working on ITER assembly tasks in ITER, France.

The ITER project jointly undertaken by the European Union, the United States, Japan, Russia, China, South Korea, and India is one of the largest multilateral international scientific and technological cooperation projects in the world today. It is a key step in the realization of future commercial fusion energy. It is a fundamental solution The energy issues, environmental issues and social sustainable development issues facing mankind are of great significance.
