Teijin joins Aerospace Innovation Centre to enhance the advantages of carbon fiber composite materials for aerospace application

On June 15, Japan`s Teijin Corporation announced that it has officially joined the Aerospace Innovation Centre (AIC) organized by Spirit AeroSystems Inc..

Spirit AeroSystems Inc., as the world's largest manufacturer of Tier 1 aircraft components, has offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Malaysia. The company's flagship products are aircraft fuselage and wings and other parts, providing innovative composite material manufacturing solutions for global customers.

Through this alliance, Teijin will work directly with Spirit and other members of the AIC organization; Teijin will enhance its manufacturing capabilities and contribute to Spirit’s vision to achieve technological innovation and build a sustainable future. In addition, this cooperation will strengthen Teijin's advantage as a leading supplier of carbon fiber and composite materials for aerospace applications.

The AIC Center covers an area of approximately 85,000 square feet and is headquartered in Prestwick, Scotland. In a collaborative environment with major partners, it covers Spirit’s engineering design and manufacturing expertise, and has advanced development and pre-production expertise. Production equipment.

Teijin has positioned the development of carbon fiber intermediate materials for aircraft as the "strategic focus" of its mid-term business plan, and is promoting the development of a wide range of applications.

As one of the company’s mid-term management plan for 2020-2022, Teijin is currently vigorously accelerating the development of mid- and downstream aircraft applications, such as the development of cost-effective carbon fiber with higher toughness and higher tensile modulus, including Tenax™ dry Type reinforced carbon fiber materials (Tenax™ DR) and other intermediate materials, carbon fiber thermoplastic unidirectional prepreg tapes (Tenax™ TPUD), carbon fiber thermoplastic consolidated laminates (Tenax™ TPCL) and thermosetting prepregs.

As a leading provider of aircraft application solutions, Teijin intends to further strengthen its carbon fiber and intermediate materials business in the future.

About Aerospace Innovation Centre

The Spirit AeroSystems AIC Center is committed to developing advanced structures and manufacturing concepts to meet the expected performance, cost, and speed requirements of future aircraft. Future aircraft will consist of fewer parts. Spirit is working hard to combine the best features of various aircraft structures to reduce the number of parts, thereby improving the efficiency of aircraft manufacturing and operations.

Research in the field of new materials and existing materials is the key to improving efficiency and aircraft performance. Spirit aims to completely reduce the risk of the development process by making full use of the composite material manufacturing, automation and assembly technology digital line in the entire production process. The high-rate repeatable manufacturing process from the introduction of the first batch of products.
