Teijin’s Tenax™ carbon fiber prepreg is successfully used in Airbus aircraft engine nacelles

On June 1, the official website of Teijin of Japan announced that the company’s Tenax™ carbon fiber prepreg has been successfully used in the nacelle or streamlined shell of European Airbus’s next-generation aircraft engines.

Nikkiso Co., Ltd. ( a company that provides carbon fiber composite aircraft components to the aerospace business) is developing a prototype of the cabin components for the Airbus "Propulsion of Tomorrow" project will be 2021 Delivery to Airbus at the end of the year.

The Airbus Tomorrow Advancement Project aims to provide cabin components for the next-generation engine UltraFan demonstrator developed by Rolls-Royce.

Tenax™ carbon fiber prepreg, as a kind of prepreg for cabin parts, is specially developed for aircraft applications, mainly using high-performance carbon fiber and fast-curing epoxy resin. It is worth noting that Tenax™ carbon fiber prepreg can be molded at a lower temperature and in a shorter time than traditional prepregs used in aircraft applications.

In addition to common autoclave molding, Tenax™ prepregs are also suitable for mass production press molding, which can achieve the excellent quality required for aircraft applications. In addition, it is also compatible with automatic fiber placement (AFP) processes, so it can be combined with automatic lamination technology and short-time molding to maximize production efficiency. Tenax™ prepreg has excellent production efficiency and cost-effectiveness, which is the key reason why Nikkiso Nacelle chose it.

At present, Teijin is vigorously accelerating the development of mid- and downstream aircraft applications, which is one of the strategic priorities of its mid-term management plan for 2020-2022. Looking to the future, Teijin intends to further strengthen its carbon fiber and intermediate materials business to promote global sustainable development and position its goal to become a company that supports the future society.
