Ternary cathode materials: NCM (lithium nickel cobalt manganate) and NCA (lithium nickel cobalt aluminate)

The ternary cathode material is modified from LiNiO2. There are two major types of NCM (commonly known as lithium nickel cobalt manganate) and NCA (commonly known as lithium nickel cobalt aluminate). The addition of the third component effectively solves the problem of the stability of the layered structure of lithium cobaltate (LiCoO2) or lithium nickelate (LiNiO2) and plays a supporting role.

Under the new subsidy policy, power batteries are developing toward high energy density. Lithium-ion ternary materials can effectively increase the energy density of the battery and reduce the weight and volume of the battery pack without a significant increase in the overall cost. It is the future power battery One of the mainstream directions for the development of cathode materials.

Market size forecast

According to statistics, the output of ternary materials precursors reached 145,000 tons in the first half of 2019, an increase of 42% year-on-year; the output of ternary materials reached 106,000 tons, an increase of 51.4% year-on-year. It is estimated that the global ternary material output in 2019 is 260,000-270,000 tons, of which the domestic output will reach 190,000-200,000 tons.
