The world’s highest graphene anticorrosive material for power transmission towers: salt fog life exceeds 9000 hours, protection life increased by approximately 3 times

In the afternoon of October 17th, news was uploaded from the final acceptance meeting of the National Key Laboratory of Marine Engineering Equipment's Corrosion and Protection Key 973 Project of the National Institute of Materials Science and Technology's 973 Program, including important application results-Zhoushan Base's 380-meter highest transmission tower in the world Six subjects including anti-corrosion engineering successfully passed the inspection and acceptance. Academician Ding Wenjiang of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Academician Wu Xigao of Dalian University of Technology, and Academician Xue Qunji of Ningbo Institute of Materials Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences visited the Jintang Island in Zhoushan. "Graphene" anticorrosive jacket, the world's tallest power transmission tower.

The transmission tower is 380 meters high and faces high salinity, high humidity and high temperature in the tropical marine environment. In order to slow down the corrosion of power facilities, ensure that the internal structure of power equipment is not damaged, and extend the life of transmission towers, the State Grid Ningbo Company actively cooperated with the “Academician Xue Qunji and Wang Liping Researcher Team” of the Ningbo Institute of Materials of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Heavy anticorrosive coating is applied on this tower.

For emerging marine engineering, island engineering and other fields, corrosion is one of the important factors affecting the safety of equipment, facilities and service life. Heavy anticorrosive coating is the key material to reduce corrosion damage and ensure the reliability and service life of equipment and facilities under severe corrosive environments. Its development level is an important symbol of the national coating technology level.

Graphene can enhance the coating's adhesion, impact resistance and other mechanical properties and the barrier properties of the medium, especially it can significantly improve the anti-corrosive media (water, chloride, oxygen, etc.) of service coatings in the tropical marine atmospheric environment. Penetration ability, while greatly reducing the thickness of the coating film, improve the corrosion life of the coating.

Pu Jibin, a researcher at the Ningbo Institute of Materials Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the graphene-modified heavy-duty anticorrosive coating used in the anticorrosion project has passed the identification of results organized by the Chinese Society for Corrosion and Protection. In 2017, it also won the Silver Award of China Good Design. Compared with traditional anticorrosive coatings, Pu Jibin explained that the key technical indicators of the anticorrosion project have a salt spray life of more than 9000 hours and a protective life increase of about 3 times, which is at the international leading level. He said that this is also the first time in the world to complete the entire engineering chain of graphene-modified heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings, including material development, natural environment assessment, engineering demonstration, and even large-scale production and application. "From a market perspective, graphene-modified heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings are very cost-effective."

It is reported that at present, the achievement has achieved industrialization of the achievement. In addition to the large-scale application of the related stereotyped products on transmission towers, it is also used in oil storage tanks, distribution network facilities, bridge engineering, ships, and South China Sea marine facilities. It is of positive significance to implement the national strategy of "full implementation of the marine strategy and development of the marine economy" and the "Belt and Road".
