Toray Advanced Composites will use glass fiber or carbon fiber to reinforce BASF’s Ultramid PA6 engineering thermoplastics to manufacture CFRT tapes

Toray Advanced Composites and BASF have signed a manufacturing and supply agreement focusing on the production of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic ("CFRT") strip for the automotive and industrial markets.

Toray Advanced Composites will use Ultramid® engineering thermoplastics developed and produced by BASF to manufacture high-quality and affordable CFRT tapes. The fiber manufacturer will use glass fiber or carbon fiber to reinforce BASF's Ultramid PA6 resin.

Keisuke Ishii, CEO of Toray Advanced Composites, said: "For many years, BASF has been the most important partner of Toray Advanced Composites. This new supply agreement has strengthened our ability to manufacture the best quality and reasonable prices for our customers. Ability."

The supply agreement has increased production capacity and provided CFRT with a greater commercial scope, which will help to use this advanced material for lightweight structural components in a wide range of industrial markets. Using CFRT materials, automakers will be able to design and quickly produce optimized components at a lower cost, while also using the latest manufacturing methods, such as automated stamping and overmolding.

Jeff DeAlmeida, Vice President of BASF ’s North American High Performance Materials Transportation Industry, said: “By developing innovative lightweight composite technology for automotive applications, this collaboration underscores our two companies’ strong commitment to promoting sustainable solutions.

Toray's advanced composite CFRT is compatible with BASF's wide range of Ultramid compounds, which allows multifunctional parts to be efficiently produced in fewer processing steps and in a more labor-saving manner than many traditional methods. BASF's Ultramid products include unique and innovative materials developed to optimize structural applications.
