Toray and Mitsui Marine develop FPSO/FSO carbon fiber composite repair technology

On December 24, Toray announced its cooperation with Mitsui Marine Development Co., Ltd. to jointly design, build, and operate and maintain offshore floating production, storage and offloading equipment (FPSO) and offshore floating storage and offloading equipment (FSO) for the latter. ), developed carbon fiber composite repair technology. This standard repair method specifically for the hull corrosion department has been certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

In the traditional sense, the maintenance of FPSO/FSO uses steel as the repair material, and the repair operation is carried out at the same time as oil and gas production. However, the industry urgently needs repair technology with lighter materials and less susceptible to fire.

Toray Japan has a patented CFRP vacuum forming technology that is carried out in a narrow work site to meet the requirements of FPSO/FSO operations. Mitsui Marine Development Co., Ltd. is the world's leading and the only company in Japan specializing in offshore floating production, storage and unloading of oil and gas equipment. The repair technology jointly developed by the two parties this time uses high-strength and high-modulus carbon fiber special fabrics. Compared with traditional steel repair methods, the materials are lighter and easier to handle; labor requirements are small; construction time is shorter, and it is not easy to catch fire. The impact is minimized.

In accordance with the requirements of the company's mid-term management issues, Toray will continue to develop the technology development and market applications of carbon fiber composite materials in different fields.
