Toray will increase carbon fiber production capacity and target wind power and automotive demand

Toray has a 40% share of the global carbon fiber market and will invest up to 20 billion yen to increase production. Japanese material maker Toray plans to increase its carbon fiber production capacity by 20% and will invest up to 20 billion yen in Hungary and Mexico to expand factories. Globally, demand for carbon fiber from offshore wind power and pure electric vehicles (EV) will increase. Toray, which has a global share of 40%, will increase its international competitiveness through early investment. By 2021, Toray will increase the annual production capacity of the Mexican subsidiary of the US subsidiary Zoltek by 5,000 tons, and increase the production capacity of the company's Hungary factory by 5,000 tons by 2022. This time, instead of increasing the production of high-performance products for aircraft, it is increasing the production of "large tow carbon fiber" products with higher production efficiency and lower prices. Toray's current production capacity is about 47,000 tons. In addition to this investment, it is also decided to increase production at another Hungary plant by 5,000 tons, with a total capacity of more than 60,000 tons. Lightweight, high-strength carbon fibers are constantly being used in various fields, including other companies. The annual global carbon fiber production capacity is expected to be about 100,000 tons.
