Unilever launches environmentally friendly filling packaging for CIF, refillable, 100% recyclable

Unilever has developed new refillable and 100% recyclable packaging for its Cif household cleaning brand.

The packaging uses 75% less plastic, and Cif environmentally friendly filling is connected to Cif Power & Shine bottles through plastic sleeves. Consumers can fill the bottle with water and then release the 10x concentrated product into the bottle.

Once the plastic sleeve is removed, the environmentally friendly filling can be recycled 100%. Unilever's plan is that by the end of 2020, all CIF environmentally friendly filling and spray bottles will be made of 100% recycled plastic.

The company believes that smaller specifications are better for the environment. Eco-friendly fillings are lightweight, thus saving storage space. At the same time, diluting products at home means 97% less water is transported, fewer trucks are on the road, and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.

Helen Bird, Strategic Engagement Manager at Wrap, which manages the British Plastics Convention, said: "We know that people are looking to reduce the plastic footprint, and the use of concentrates, such as this innovative design by Unilever, is one way to support this. .Besides that, a major environmental benefit is the reduction in the number of products shipped across the UK. "

Unilever wants its consumers to use their Cif Power & Shine trigger spray bottle for life. If the trigger spray ruptures, customers can call the CIF Customer Care Center to receive a new trigger spray delivered to their home for free.

Gemma Cleland, Unilever's UK and Irish vice president of home care, said: "The launch of CIF's environmentally friendly fillings is a rule-changing move to reduce plastic waste in the products we use to clean our homes. Our research shows "When we throw away plastic, two-thirds feel guilty and consumers are looking for simple ways to make a positive impact on the world around us."

He added: "We don't think there is a better starting point than at home. By keeping a bottle of CIF and repeatedly filling and reusing it, consumers can reduce their consumption of disposable plastic."

Unilever launched the Get Plastic Wise event earlier this year. The event features a five-point plastics program aimed at reducing plastic waste in the UK and Ireland. This move is part of the company's commitment to ensure that by 2025 all Unilever's plastic packaging is fully reusable, recyclable or compostable and uses more recyclables in its packaging.
