Wolfspeed’s 8-inch SiC fab has begun commercial production

On the 25th local time, Wolfspeed officially opened its state-of-the-art Mohawk Valley silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing facility in Massey, New York, USA. This 8-inch wafer fab will help drive the entire industry from silicon-based semiconductors to silicon carbide. Transformation of semiconductor based semiconductors.

According to BusinessWire, Wolfspeed President and CEO Gregg Lowe said, "I am very proud of our team and all of our partners who have created this monumental wonder in such a short time. Providing products to customers in 2019 will also ensure the long-term competitiveness of the United States.”

Eric Bach, senior vice president of product and chief engineer at Lucid Motors, said, "Wolfspeed will work with Wolfspeed to source the highest quality silicon carbide components in New York State, providing more U.S. jobs in the electric vehicle industry." Prior to this, Wolfspeed announced A multi-year partnership agreement with Lucid to supply silicon carbide equipment.

The Mohawk Valley fab is the world's first and largest 8-inch silicon carbide fab, offering uncompromised wafer quality and higher yields. The equipment developed at the facility will be critical to Wolfspeed's $20 billion-plus device pipeline and the global semiconductor industry. Earlier this month, the factory commissioned its first batch of silicon carbide wafers.

Wolfspeed is also expanding its operations in Durham, North Carolina, with a new materials plant expected to be completed later this year. Together, these facilities create a national silicon carbide corridor on the East Coast and will combine Wolfspeed's more than 30 years of North Carolina R&D history, strong technology base, rich manufacturing heritage and high-quality talent in New York's Mohawk Valley.
