ABB has completed the acquisition of Codian Robotics, a leading provider of parallel robots, with the intention of enhancing the product line of high-speed and sanitary industrial robots

ABB has completed the acquisition of Codian Robotics, a leading provider of parallel robots. The company focuses on high-precision pick and place applications. Its products include sanitary production line designs, especially suitable for sanitary sensitive industries such as food, beverages and pharmaceuticals. Through this transaction, ABB is accelerating its deployment in the growing field of parallel robots.

Codian Robotics is located in Eide, the Netherlands and has 20 employees worldwide. The company will continue to provide services directly to customers. The acquisition was signed and completed on October 1, 2020, and both parties agreed not to disclose any details about the purchase price.

An Shiming, President of ABB’s Robotics and Discrete Automation Division, said: “Our acquisition highlights our focus on breakthrough technologies, which not only helps our customers make the most of the potential of automation, but also helps them navigate the ever-changing business environment. The technology and industry knowledge of Codian Robotics is the perfect complement to our series of food and beverage, pharmaceutical, service robot and logistics solutions, and it is also a strong support for ABB's machine-centric robot products."

"Over the years, we have developed a broad product portfolio. ABB's outstanding global influence and industry experience will help us provide products on a global scale. I look forward to the two parties writing a new chapter in our success story." Codian Robotics founder Freek Hartman said.

At present, most of the robots used in the food and beverage industry are not designed for food contact applications, while Codian Robotics' product portfolio includes hygienic designs that can achieve safe and open food processing.

The industry urgently needs pick and place robots that can ensure high hygiene standards, and the new crown pneumonia epidemic has accelerated this demand. Our customers in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and logistics industries are very interested in the potential of automation. Automation can not only support the sustainable operation of the supply chain, but also protect the health and safety of employees. An Shiming added.

In the future, ABB will be able to provide customers with a wider range of parallel robots and integrated solutions from the same source, and at the same time further advance ABB's machine-centric robotics strategy, that is, integrating machine automation and robot control into the same platform.

Hans Wimmer, President of ABB's Mechanical Automation Business Unit and Managing Director of B&R, said: "Codian Robotics has an extraordinary track record in the field of machinery manufacturers. With our acquisition of one of the world's most successful parallel robot providers, we In the future, we will be able to provide fully integrated solutions for customers worldwide and in all industries."
