Alcoa launches the industry’s first metallurgical grade low-carbon alumina product: Eco Source

On September 23, Alcoa, the world's third largest alumina business, launched the industry's first metallurgical grade low-carbon alumina product. The highlight of this alumina named Eco Source is that the carbon dioxide emission per ton of product does not exceed 0.6 tons (about 0.54 tons), while the industry average value is 1.2 tons.

"The calculation of carbon dioxide equivalent includes direct emissions from bauxite mining and alumina refining, as well as indirect emissions from energy consumption." Alcoa Chief Commercial Officer Timothy Reyes explained. "This is the result of years of sustainable operation and improved production processes." On this basis, Alcoa also launched a low-carbon electrolytic aluminum product. The electrolytic aluminum named Ecolum has no more than 4 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per ton.

According to Reyes, Alcoa defines carbon emissions in alumina and electrolytic aluminum production more comprehensively and transparently than other manufacturers, and has become a leader in the low-carbon product market. There is no doubt that the industry's environmental protection threshold will be raised again.
