May 10, 2021-Avient announced the addition of three proprietary thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) formulations containing antimicrobial additives to its GLS™ thermoplastic elastomer product portfolio. According to tests conducted according to JIS Z2801 and ASTM G21-15 standards, these additives protect molded plastic parts by inhibiting the growth of bacteria (over 99.9%) and resisting the growth of fungi and mold.
In addition to causing odor problems, these microorganisms may also cause harmful changes in the mechanical properties of the finished plastic parts and become unsightly. High-contact surfaces and applications are particularly susceptible. In response, Avient has developed GLS TPE with antimicrobial additives, available as Versaflex™ and OnFlex™ grades. Potential applications include grips for consumer electronics, personal care products, and automotive applications such as cup holder mats and HVAC sealing.
GLS TPE with antimicrobial additives can help extend the life of the product, thereby reducing the need to replace the product. Other benefits include maintaining the integrity of the surface, improving durability, and minimizing odors for a better consumer experience.

After testing for common microorganisms, GLS TPE containing antibacterial additives has been proven to protect finished parts from the growth of microorganisms on textured and smooth surfaces. Their formulations contain EPA-registered antibacterial agents provided by Lonza LLC. Lonza LLC is a trusted leader in the field of microbial control solutions. The chemical composition of this additive is the same as that used in personal care products such as anti-dandruff shampoos for decades.
GLS TPE with antibacterial additives is available in the US and Asia. Other formulations containing antibacterial agents are under development.
