BASF’s new material Elastolit® 8819 helps cars lose weight

For the first time, BASF has applied a new material, Elastolit® 8819, to parts for high-end models and mass-produced them. Compared with the traditional material technology, this new technology can greatly reduce the weight of parts while reducing the fuel consumption of the car while ensuring safety.

According to relevant data, under the premise of using the same power system and transmission system, for every 10% reduction in the mass of a passenger car, fuel consumption can be reduced by 6% -8%. Therefore, whether it is a traditional fuel vehicle or a new energy vehicle, the lightweight design of the entire vehicle is currently an imperative trend.

Generally speaking, the front and rear bumpers of small cars generally use short-fiber reinforced polyurethane systems with a wall thickness of 3mm. After using the new process, the thickness of 3mm parts can be reduced to less than 2.5mm without adversely affecting the processing, quality or mechanical properties.

It is reported that the research and development results are based on the in-depth cooperation between BASF and STR Automotive. Previous attempts by BASF to reduce weight by reducing the thickness of components or using special filler combinations and correspondingly lower density materials have failed because of insufficient mechanical properties such as mechanical strength, stiffness and impact strength of the resulting components. In this regard, STR Automotive has proposed a solution for BASF, that is, high modulus PU base material with high temperature resistance, high rigidity and good impact strength.

Guiseppe Monaco, Manager of Performance Materials, SpA, BASF Italy, said: "STR Automotive, as an innovative company, can provide support in the early stages of the development of existing component materials." According to different needs and applications, new materials can be combined with different filler materials. , Used in automotive rear bumpers, side panels, engine compartments and parts with special weight reduction requirements. In the first series of parts made with this new material, the weight per square meter of surface area has been reduced by 600g. For the rear fender, this means a weight reduction of up to 1.5kg.

Massimo Cecchini, CEO of STR Automotive, said: "By combining new materials and compatible fillers, we can meet the different needs of customers. For OEMs and users, car weight reduction cannot be achieved at the expense of quality. It must be balanced. Value for money. "
