Borouge and Borealis launched the BORLINK™ LS4201S solution for high field strength 220 kV high voltage cables at the China International Cable and Wire Show

Borouge and Borealis will exhibit their innovative solutions in the energy sector at the 2020 China International Wire & Wire Show, including leading applications in the fields of renewable energy, power transmission, power distribution and communications.

Currently, power companies are looking for more compact power cable solutions. To comply with this market trend, the cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) material designed by Borouge and Borealis is not only suitable for the specified voltage, but also capable of withstanding larger operating field strength.

Borouge High Voltage Solutions

Borlink™ LS4201H is used in high-voltage cables and was first produced in 2017 at Borouge’s advanced XLPE plant in Ruwais, UAE. After three years of continuous improvement, the material has become the industry benchmark for high-voltage insulation materials with low field strength and rated voltage of 161 kV.

Currently, Borouge has launched Borlink™ LS4201S, which is designed for power cables for high field strength applications with a rated voltage of up to 230 kV. Borlink™ LS4201S is produced in an extremely clean environment and performs well in the face of a maximum working field strength of 10 kV/mm. In addition, it has design flexibility, superior scorch safety and reliability, and can be used in the production of long-length cables with ultra-high cleanliness, which benefits XLPE cable manufacturers.

The scorch safety of Borlink™ LS4201S is significantly improved, which reduces the risk of cable insulation defects, reduces the degassing time during cable production, optimizes the cable manufacturer’s production cycle and single start-up time, and improves overall safety and reliability.

Borlink™ LS4201S has successfully completed the type test conforming to the IEC62067 international standard. It is currently in the late stage of the DNV-GL KEMA pre-qualification test, and the test is expected to be completed in 2020.

Cross-linked polyethylene supporting offshore applications

With more than 50 years of experience in the development of XLPE and semi-conductive materials, including a 15-year record of success in the field of low scorch and high voltage XLPE technology, Borouge and Borealis can well serve the rapidly growing offshore wind power market .

Borlink™ Supercure technology is an ideal choice for complex applications of offshore wind power submarine cables, because it can guarantee the life-long durability and reliability of the cable, thanks to the high cleanliness of its insulation compound. With Borlink™ Supercure technology, the production of long-length cables no longer requires connectors, which is convenient for installation and reduces the risk of failure. To ensure absolute cleanliness, all Borlink™ Supercure insulation materials are produced and packaged on specially designed assembly lines.

The Zhejiang Zhoushan 500kV submarine cable project uses BorlinkTM Supercure technology to build and lay the world's longest 500kV cross-linked polyethylene insulated submarine cable, which connects Zhoushan City and Ningbo City, provides clean energy and increases power supply for the Zhoushan Islands New District.

This is the first time that a 500kV submarine cable has been manufactured in China. Therefore, this project has also become a turning point for the breakthrough development of Chinese submarine cable manufacturers JSHT High Voltage Submarine Cable, JSZT Technology Submarine Cable and NBDF Cable. The three cable manufacturers all chose Borlink™ LS4201EHV and LE0500 materials from Borouge and Borealis, and produced jointless cables with a length of more than 18 kilometers, setting a world record.

“Global submarine cable manufacturers choose Borealis and Borouge because they trust our high-quality solutions.” said Bart Verheule, head of Borealis’ energy marketing department. “Borlink™ technology is currently being used for the world’s first 525 kV XLPE insulation high voltage The DC 2GW transmission line, which meets the bidding conditions for the German corridor infrastructure project, will transport renewable energy from wind farms along the northern coast of Germany to southern Germany, contributing to a decarbonized and green future."

Laying the foundation for 5G technology

In terms of deploying 5G technology and building 5G networks, China Mobile operators have always been a world leader. The 5G network will connect users and businesses in major cities across the country. Optical cables are essential to realize 5G intelligent networks and the Internet of Things. With the wave of new technologies sweeping across China and other parts of the world, constantly changing the way people live and work, the demand for fiber optic cable applications is expected to increase exponentially.

Borouge and Borealis provide a wide range of cable jacket materials. High-end products based on Borstar® technology include linear low-density, medium-density and high-density polyethylene black materials and UV-resistant natural color materials. All products have excellent stress crack resistance and easy processing.

“As a reliable partner in the wire and cable industry, Borouge is committed to providing our customers and partners with excellent value and creating competitive advantages.” said Zhou Zhiyong, vice president of Borouge’s energy marketing department. “We invest heavily in research and development and continue to expand our Customized solutions to meet future market demand for sustainable energy."
