Carlsberg partnered with innovative packaging companies ecoXpac and BillerudKorsnas to produce the world’s first “paper” beer bottle using recycled PET and bio-based PEF materials

Carlsberg has announced the two latest research prototypes of "green fiber bottles". So far, the world's first "paper bottle" for beer has been made public. Carlsberg also announced that it will work closely with other leading global companies to promote the development of sustainable packaging with the continuous advancement of paper bottle technology.

These latest developments represent Carlsberg ’s continuous promotion of sustainable packaging innovation and an important part of its sustainable development plan “Together Towards ZERO”, which includes a commitment to achieve zero carbon emissions from wineries by 2030 and will The carbon footprint of the entire value chain is reduced by 30%.

Two latest prototypes use recycled PET and bio-based PEF

Both of the latest research prototypes are made from wood fibers of sustainable origin and can be fully recycled. The compartment design inside the bottle meets the requirements for beer.

One prototype used recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) polymer film interlayer, and the other used 100% bio-based PEF (polyethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) polymer film. Compartment.

These prototypes will be used to test the barrier technology, helping Carlsberg to create a solution faster to achieve the ultimate goal of polymer-free 100% bio-based wine bottles.

Working with new partners

In 2015, Carlsberg collaborated with innovative packaging companies ecoXpac and BillerudKorsnas, as well as postdoctoral researchers at the Technical University of Denmark, to develop a “green fiber bottle”, a wine bottle made from wood fibers of sustainable origin. The project received Danish innovation Fund (Innovation Fund Denmark) strong support.

With the joint efforts of all parties, BillerudKorsnas and the professional packaging bottle manufacturing company Alpla jointly established the paper bottle company Paboco ®

One of the research prototypes of the Carlsberg Group's green fiber beer bottles.

Today, The Coca-Cola Company, The Absolut Company and L'Oreal will join Carlsberg in the carton community launched today by Paboco®. The community unites leading global companies and experts with the same vision to jointly promote sustainable packaging and provide high-quality products while reducing the impact on the environment.

Myriam Shingleton then said:

In 2015, we started to develop "green fiber bottles" with our partners. Judging from the results achieved so far, as long as everyone works together, this innovation can become a reality.

We are happy that other like-minded companies have joined us now and become part of the Paboco carton community. Through this form of cooperation, everyone comes together with the desire to create sustainable innovation, which is the best way to bring about real change.

Paboco® interim CEO Gittan Schiold commented: "All this is closely related to the team! Our cooperation covers the entire value chain, shares risks together, and strives to make the carton become a reality, thereby fundamentally subverting the entire industry.
