Chinese researchers have developed a solar-driven basalt fiber seawater desalination membrane

Recently, the research team of Researcher Yu Xuefeng, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made new breakthroughs in the application of basalt fiber photothermal seawater desalination and water purification. Related work A Versatile Solar-Powered Vapor Generating Membrane for Multi-Media Purification (a universal solar-powered photothermal film for water treatment) was published in the authoritative journal Separation and Purification Technology in the field of environmental engineering and chemical engineering (DOI: 10.1016/j.seppur.2020.117952) on. The co-first authors of the paper are postdoctoral fellows Wan Peng and Gu Xiaobin, and the corresponding authors are researcher Yu Xuefeng.

Water resources are the basis for human survival. However, due to extensive industrialization and population growth, water resources are polluted and become scarce. Among various water treatment technologies, membrane treatment technology has no health risks and does not require filter aids. , Flexible use and other advantages, so it is widely used. However, the traditional membrane separation process requires pressure drive, so energy consumption is relatively high. In recent years, the emergence of related technologies using sunlight to drive water evaporation has provided new ideas for water treatment. The ideal photothermal film material should have excellent photothermal performance, flexibility, stability, simple preparation and low price. However, due to chemical or physical limitations, most of the materials are insufficiently stable, expensive, and the manufacturing process of the photothermal film is complicated. These shortcomings severely limit the application of photothermal materials in solar thermal seawater desalination and water purification. .

Recently, the research group of researcher Yu Xuefeng used natural basalt as raw material to design and prepare a cheap, stable and corrosion-resistant basalt fiber photothermal film for use in photothermal seawater desalination and water purification. This photothermal film shows wide absorption in both ultraviolet (UV) and near-infrared (NIR) ranges, and has excellent photothermal performance and can operate stably under different conditions. In addition, the basalt fiber photothermal film has excellent evaporation and separation performance in organic dye solution (removal rate 99%), oil-water mixture (removal rate 99%) and seawater desalination (removal rate 99%). Basalt fiber photothermal film The water evaporation efficiency under one sunlight can reach 1.50 kg.m-2.h-1, and the assembled sunlight evaporation system can continuously and effectively desalinate seawater.

The results of this study show that basalt fiber photothermal film has broad application prospects in the field of seawater desalination and water purification, such as organic solvent decolorization, oil-water emulsion deoiling, high-salt seawater desalination, etc., greatly expanding the current basalt fiber and photothermal conversion materials Application areas in water treatment.
