Continental and Schaeffler Strategic Cooperation in Sourcing & Procurement

Continental and Schaeffler jointly select suppliers

At the end of 2015, Continental and Schaeffler Group jointly invited suppliers from 11 countries to gather in Herzogenaurach, Germany, to participate in the third quality supplier day jointly held by the two.

In the field of procurement, Continental Group and Schaeffler Group have cooperated for 6 years, among which the selection of quality suppliers is an important part of their strategic cooperation. The 37 high-quality suppliers invited this time supply raw materials and parts to two companies’ global bases.

The two companies have a total of more than 1,200 suppliers, of which 110 are evaluated according to an auditing standard that includes 10 criteria. In 2015, 9 new suppliers met stringent requirements and entered the ranks of high-quality suppliers; the status of 28 existing high-quality suppliers was also confirmed.

The selection criteria include: appropriate product mix; excellent quality performance; excellent logistics services to achieve global and regional distribution. In addition, the two requirements for joint suppliers are increasing: development time is shortened and quality management requirements are strengthened.

It is understood that through joint procurement and close cooperation with high-quality suppliers, the two companies can take advantage of synergies and reduce costs to more effectively meet challenges.

Suppliers who have entered the high-quality ranks will also enjoy unique advantages: they are included in the joint procurement strategy and can participate in product development projects early. This provides an opportunity to keep up with industry trends and collaborate on innovation.

Günter Fella, Senior Vice President of Purchasing, Continental Automotive Group, said: “Only through innovative products and systems can the automotive industry’s current challenges in the fields of safety, environment and information technology be addressed. Support is a determining factor. “

This time, the combined purchase of the two companies reached nearly 16.2 billion euros.
