Corning enhances NanoPerforation glass cutting technology to match 3D glass cutting application development

Corning Corporation recently announced enhancements to its unique NanoPerforation glass cutting technology to meet the development needs of 3D glass cutting applications.

This new breakthrough in Corning's laser technology (CLT) field will help industrial designers better adapt to global market trends and use curved glass in consumer mobile devices, automotive interiors and other major areas.

Corning's new NanoPerforation glass cutting technology is specially designed to solve the problems of free-form surfaces and three-dimensional cutting, which are difficult to achieve with traditional mechanical wheels and grinding processes.

NanoPerforation glass cutting technology uses ultra-short pulse laser to cut the glass by using local perforation instead of material burning. Corning has applied this technology to 2D glass applications, and several successful cases show that it can achieve smooth and high-quality cutting results with extremely high processing speed and accuracy. Today, Corning is proud to announce that the technology will be suitable for cutting 3D-shaped glass.

In order to achieve vertical cutting, Corning specially developed a high-speed, high-precision CLT 5-axis beam transmission system, which includes two high-speed rotary axes and a high-speed X, Y, and Z-direction drive system. As a new member of Corning's glass cutting technology, the CLT 43D system can accurately cut 3D glass shapes up to 1200 mm x 700 mm x 300 mm.

The CLT solution enables precise cutting of freeform surfaces and simplifies the tedious process steps. And NanoPerforation technology can create high-quality cutting surface and greatly reduce subsequent processing. CLT NanoPerforation is not only more flexible in implementation, it also helps to achieve innovative design of parts.

"The 3D glass cutting capability of the CLT 43D system creates greater design freedom for industrial designers," said Michael Mueller, Corning's Laser Technology Business Director. "With Corning's more than 20 years of experience in precision laser processing and more than 150 years of materials science, Expertise, our solutions will provide our customers with differentiated products.
