Covestro Dureflex® and Platilon® TPU films are used in automotive parts

Covestro's Dureflex® and Platilon® TPU films are used in the field of automotive components: adding flexibility and impermeability to the fabric laminate structure of automotive roller blinds. The panoramic car sunroof is more and more popular with the public because it can bring a sense of spaciousness to the car interior. However, controlling the amount of sunlight entering the car is an important consideration, because too much sunlight can cause the car to overheat.

Therefore, when necessary, the roller blind can be closed to reduce the light shining into the car, and when the roller blind is opened, the light will shine into the car.

In the past, skylights used rigid sliding blinds, which limited mobility and possible design specifications for skylights or roof windows. With the changes in vehicle structural components, the design of large panoramic sunroofs becomes possible. However, the blinds may also require a new design to improve their function and degree of opening.

The challenge faced by many car manufacturers is to find suitable materials that meet the design and performance requirements. For panoramic sunroofs, the ideal material must act as a hot melt adhesive and be able to bond to the fabric used (the fabric is usually a polyester fabric). The film must also be able to maintain its performance over a wide temperature range and must be a high-quality film. The film must also be thin enough to save space when rolled up, but it must also have a certain degree of opacity to control light penetration. Finally, films and fabrics must meet the FR requirements specified in the MVSS302 specification.

Covestro's Dureflex® and Platilon® thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films provide high-performance material solutions for the needs of modern skylights. TPU film is a tough and durable material commonly used for fabric lamination and is an excellent choice for roller blind applications.

Covestro films offer a variety of attractive properties for automotive sunroof and roof window applications. Platilon® or Dureflex® TPU films can be used as fabric laminates for sunroofs in automobiles. These two films can effectively block sunlight and can be easily integrated in a small space.

The high flexibility of the light-shielding TPU film rolled at the same time makes large-area sun visors possible. These fabric laminate films are light and have excellent flexibility. Compared with past sliding-type shading plates, these films can soften light, are lightweight, and take up less space. Covestro offers flame-retardant and flame-resistant TPU films suitable for different structural designs and specifications.

These films can be thermally laminated between two fabric layers or on one side of the fabric, and have a matte appearance, thereby simplifying the structure of the roller blind and reducing the use of a fabric layer.
