Covestro expands production of polycarbonate film in Germany

Covestro launched an additional high-quality specialty film production line at its plant in Domargen, Germany. The new co-extrusion production line is to meet the growing global demand. The project is part of a global plan to expand film production capacity, with a total investment of more than 100 million euros. Although restricted by the coronavirus pandemic, it was completed as planned. This plan will create approximately 30 new jobs to operate the new production line.

Dr. Klaus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Covestro, said: "Through this expansion of production capacity, we are strengthening the Dormagn site as a special film production and competence center. At the same time, we are investing in future-oriented technologies and applications."

The new production line will mainly produce multilayer flat films. For example, these products play an important role in identification documents in order to embed security features to ensure that forgery is prevented as much as possible. They are also used in medical technology and car interiors.

Prepare for the future

Michael Friede, Global Head of the Coatings, Adhesives and Specialty Products Division, said: "These high-quality products and applications represent an important business for Covestro in the future. Through new capacity and its integration with our film center, we We are emphasizing our closeness and service to customers."

"Our new production line is equipped with the most advanced technology." Dr. Thorsten Dreier, Global Head of Covestro's Specialty Films and Thermoplastic Polyurethanes business emphasized, "This is why we can now supply customers with faster and higher quality. We also Hope to improve our development work and bring new products to the market faster."

Competence center close to customers

The competence center in Dormagen includes a production and film processing technology center, as well as a showroom and research laboratory. Covestro operates two other semi-finished product competence centers in Leverkusen and Bomlitz, Germany, and has multiple competence centers around the world.

As a further measure of the global investment plan, Covestro launched a new polycarbonate film production facility in Map Ta Phut, Thailand last year. Prior to this, a co-extrusion film factory in Guangzhou, China, was remodeled for the future, and the production efficiency and quality in South Deerfield, the United States were also improved.
