At K2016, Covestro introduced a new type of polyurethane adhesive, designed for composite materials, with excellent UV protection, as well as excellent weather resistance and chemical resistance. The product is called Desmocomp® and is based on an aliphatic isocyanate, making it perfect for outdoor applications. It does not require additional surface protection materials such as coatings, UV absorbers, UV pads or films.
Excellent performance
The new adhesive material has a long storage period and fast curing speed, so its process cost is extremely low. Like other polyurethane materials, Desmocomp® also exhibits high activity, variable viscosity, and high bond strength. It effectively penetrates glass fibers and produces long lasting high-strength properties. In addition, the material has anti-graffiti and flame retardant properties.
These advantages open the door for the outdoor application market for Desmocomp®. For example, Desmocomp® is currently used in the manufacture of components for light commercial vehicles. Covestro's research and development partner Sortimo International LLC will show composite parts made with new adhesives at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover, Germany, September 22-29. The auto parts on display are side elements in Sortimo's new System-Unit, which have excellent stability, durability and weather resistance, and are ideal parts to meet the needs of pickup trucks and flatbed trucks.
