Evonik Austria Schörfling Membrane Business Expansion Project Commences Production of Gas Separation Membrane Modules

Evonik Industries Group held a groundbreaking ceremony for Schörfling in Austria. The group will build a new production facility for hollow fiber spinning plants for the production of SEPURAN® gas separation membrane modules. In addition, the facility also includes work areas for expanding the base’s research and development, application technology, and a new warehouse. The project will cost tens of millions of euros. The new plant will double existing capacity and is expected to officially open by the end of 2017.

“Our membrane business has grown rapidly and has become a model for the company to enter new markets with innovative products. Today’s commencement ceremony will continue the success of the company’s membrane business and further strengthen the company’s technology leadership in the high-growth gas separation market.” Dr. Yingkaishi said.

Evonik’s Schörfling plant currently produces gas separation components for the biogas market and hydrogen helium recovery. The new hollow fiber spinning plant will mainly produce membrane modules for high-efficiency nitrogen on-site nitrogen production. SEPURAN® membranes can provide customers with efficient solutions to complete the separation of methane, nitrogen or hydrogen from mixed gases. The advantages of Evonik’s gas separation membrane technology include precise gas separation and increased productivity.

Evonik is committed to membrane technology, and later introduced SEPURAN® Noble membranes for helium and hydrogen recovery. Evonik expects the growth of the helium and hydrogen markets to reach approximately 10% in the next few years. At the beginning of 2016, the company’s membrane product portfolio added a new member-SEPURAN® N2, a new hollow fiber membrane for efficient on-site nitrogen production.
