JBD announces mass production of 0.13-inch Micro LED micro-display

Micro LED microdisplay leader JBD announced that it will launch the JBD4UM480P series of AMμLED microdisplay products in November this year. This series of products has a diagonal of only 0.13 inches (3.3 mm) and a resolution of 640X480. It may be the smallest and brightest VGA micro-display in the world so far. The display is about the size of a grain of rice (Figure 1), and can be easily designed into AR smart glasses. Although small in size, its brightness is amazing: red, green, and blue panels can reach brightness levels of 200,000, 2 million and 1.5 million nits respectively, and the power consumption is only in the order of 100 milliwatts under normal operating conditions.

The IC backplane of JBD4UM480P integrates a number of technologies, allowing the Micro LED micro display chip to run static images or refresh images at low speeds with extremely low power consumption. Without additional bridge IC, the display data source can be directly transmitted from the customer application system to the micro display panel through the SPI/QSPI interface. The JBD4UM480P IC backplane is equipped with a frame buffer, supports global switch and scroll switch image scanning mode, and has a global brightness adjustable range of 5000 levels. In addition, the product can realize image enhancement functions through built-in OTP memory, including brightness uniformity compensation and Gamma correction.

JBD4UM480P Micro LED micro display series are manufactured using JBD's proprietary hybrid integration technology. This hybrid integration technology includes the design of pixel-level optical elements (Pixel Optics) for each individual pixel, which can greatly improve the light extraction efficiency and beam shape of the Micro LED. JBD currently has more than 120 patents and registered trademarks in the design and manufacturing technology of Micro LED display panels.

The JBD4UM480P series not only includes three colors of red, green and blue monochrome panels, but also includes two full-color optical solutions formed by them. The first full-color scheme is to achieve full-color through the X-cube color prism. In the full-color module, three monochromatic panels are respectively fixed to the three sides of the X-cube, and the combined light is emitted from the fourth surface, collimated and projected by a set of microlenses, as shown in Figure 2. Including three Micro LED monochromatic panels, an X-cube color combining prism, and lens optics, the module volume of the X-cube solution is less than 1.4 cubic centimeters.

The second full-color scheme requires the use of three independent monochromatic light machines, red, green, and blue, to combine light. In this scheme, the volume of each monochromatic light machine is only 0.4 cubic centimeters, as shown in Figure 3. This solution can be combined with a multi-layer structure diffractive waveguide and multiple waveguide coupling ports for optical machines of different colors. In addition to the advantages of small size and high brightness, these two full-color solutions have no moving components, no laser light source, and no organic materials, so they are safer and can be used under harsh working conditions.

In order to allow terminal developers to evaluate the JBD4UM480P Micro LED display panel in advance and speed up its development, JBD will release the following development kits:

JBD4UM480P Micro LED Monochrome Display Panel Development Kit

JBD4UM480P Micro LED red, green and blue three monochrome display panel development kit

JBD4UM480P Micro LED Monochromatic Optical Machine Module Development Kit

JBD4UM480P Micro LED Full Color Optical Machine Module Development Kit

The design of JBD4UM480P VGA Micro LED micro display panel is very suitable for near-eye display and micro-projection-based application scenarios, such as information prompting AR smart glasses, sports optical display, holographic sight, and AR used by sports enthusiasts and athletes that are rapidly developing The goggles market (Figure 4 below). The warnings, notifications, navigation guidelines, scale markings, performance indicators and other information needed in these application scenarios can be used in the form of clear images with JBD's Micro LED micro-display technology at very low power consumption, whether outdoors or at night Present.

"We have launched a series of Micro LED micro-displays with high resolution and ultra-high pixel density for immersive experience applications. We found that we also need a micro LED display with ultra-small size, ultra-high brightness, and ultra-efficient energy saving. It is used to perfectly meet the application requirements of AR (Augmented Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality) of information prompts. Dr. Qiming Li, CEO and founder of JBD, said: "Our breakthrough technology has enabled developers to create the most compact and exquisite terminal products. While improving the comfort of the user experience, the applicable environment of the terminal products can be changed from indoors. Expand to the outdoors, and have better contrast and longer standby and service life." The JBD4UM480P Micro LED micro display panel is planned to be priced at tens of dollars. JBD will give full play to the cost competitiveness of micro display products so that it can simultaneously enter various price-sensitive potential application markets. "
