MediaTek acquires Intel’s Enpirion power management chip business

On the evening of November 16, Beijing time, Taiwan MediaTek announced that it will acquire Intel’s Enpirion power management chip product line related assets through its subsidiary Richtek. The total transaction amount is estimated to be approximately US$85 million. The completion date of the transaction is tentatively set to be the fourth In the current quarter, the actual date is expected to be completed after the relevant legal procedures are completed.

MediaTek pointed out in the announcement that the purpose of this acquisition is to expand the company’s product line and provide integrated high-frequency and high-efficiency power solutions used in FPGA, SoC, CPU, and ASIC, aiming at enterprise-level system applications and helping to expand business scale. Improve business performance and competitiveness.

Intel`s official website shows that the Intel Enpirion Power System on Chip (PowerSoC) module is a DC-DC step-down converter, which integrates almost all components required to build a power supply without affecting performance or efficiency. It can meet the requirements of FPGA, ASIC, processor and The most stringent power requirements of other semiconductors.

According to media interpretation, MediaTek has been actively developing server ASIC business recently and has also obtained orders from Google. Integrating the Intel Enpirion product line can provide a more complete solution through its layout, especially in the future 5G base stations, the number of power management chips will greatly increase, and MediaTek can also integrate existing 5G modem chips to expand more integration solutions.

The power management chip market has been undergoing constant changes recently. Analog Devices announced in July this year that it would spend $17 billion to acquire Maxim, making it one of the largest M&A transactions this year. MediaTek’s acquisition of the Intel Enpirion product line is also expected to enter the higher-end market, deploy more product lines, and usher in new growth momentum.
