Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Group is currently one of the few manufacturers in the world that owns both PAN-based carbon fibers and pitch-based carbon fibers. Mitsubishi covers raw materials to final products in the carbon fiber production chain.
The latest Kyron ™ ULTRA type carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin unidirectional prepreg types and typical characteristics.
Overview of the new carbon fiber prepreg
On March 7, 2022, the official website of Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical announced that it has developed a new Kyron ™ ULTRA-type sheet-like intermediate material, which is prepared by impregnating carbon fibers with engineering plastics. As a high-performance carbon fiber composite, it comes in the form of a UD unidirectional prepreg.
Kyron™ ULTRA carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin-based unidirectional prepreg uses Mitsubishi Chemical's high-performance carbon fiber technology, resin modification technology and composite material technology to achieve the following functions:
High performance: Using the company's composite material technology, high-performance carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin prepregs have been obtained;
High quality: ultra-low voids and high dimensional accuracy are achieved, which can be applied to thermoplastic automatic tape layup (Auto Tape Layup, ATL) molding technology, general compression molding technology, etc.;
High formability: By achieving ultra-low voids, the production time for general stamping can be shortened, and in addition, there is no need to freeze materials.

Kyron™ ULTRA carbon fiber composites utilize the properties of UD prepreg as an anisotropic material for carbon fiber, which can greatly expand the scope of product design by arranging the necessary prepreg in the right location. It can be widely used in aerospace, industrial, mobile, sports and other fields by utilizing the properties of carbon fiber and thermoplastic resin.
New carbon fiber prepreg properties
Kyron™ ULTRA carbon fiber composites have a series of products, which can be divided into PEEK-based, high-temperature PEEK-based, PEI-based and PA-based carbon fiber composites according to the type of resin matrix.
Excellent properties of new carbon fiber prepreg structural parts
Under the design conditions of equivalent stiffness, the structural parts made of Kyron™ ULTRA high-temperature PEEK-based carbon fiber composites reduce the weight by 60% compared with the previous titanium parts
And by using H&C press forming, compared with the conventional O-ring forming, the forming cycle can be shortened by half, thereby significantly improving the production efficiency.
Compared to epoxy-based carbon fiber composites, Kyron™ ULTRA carbon fiber reinforced PEEK composites have lower water absorption.
Kyron™ ULTRA carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK and PA-based composites have extremely low smoke density and gas generation compared to general-purpose resin-based composites.
