Nissan has successfully developed lightweight super sound insulation materials based on meta-material technology

On January 7, 2020, at the 2020 CES (International Consumer Electronics Show), Nissan exhibited a new lightweight super sound insulation material, which can enhance the quietness of the cabin. This material is 75% lighter than traditional sound insulation materials. And the cost is basically flat, which helps to improve fuel economy.

Nissan's super sound insulation material is composed of a crystal structure and a plastic film, which can effectively control air vibration and reduce the propagation of broadband noise (500-1200Hz) generated when the vehicle is driving on the road and the engine is working. At present, most of the sound insulation materials in this band are made of heavy-duty rubber.

Nissan Motor`s new super sound insulation material has been optimized for weight so that the weight can be reduced by 75% compared with traditional sound insulation materials without changing the sound insulation effect. The simple structure also effectively controls the cost. The production cost of the new super sound insulation material is almost the same as that of the traditional sound insulation material, and even more competitive. Therefore, the material is also suitable for vehicles limited by cost or net weight.

Nissan Motor has started research on meta-material technology since 2008. At that time, super materials were applied to high-sensitivity antennas in electromagnetic wave research. On this basis, Nissan tried to expand the applicability of metamaterials to the field of sound waves, and successfully developed super sound insulation materials.
