Polymaker launches three new polycarbonate 3D printing materials commonly used in the automotive industry

Polymaker announced the launch of three new polycarbonate-based 3D printing materials, each with unique properties, commonly used in the automotive industry. Polymaker will work with Covestro to bring new materials to market.

New materials and specifications

(1) Polymaker ™ PC-ABS: This is a 3D printing material that has been widely used. It is a mixture of polycarbonate and ABS (acrylonitrile-styrene-butadiene copolymer). Its advantages are impact resistance and heat resistance. And easy to process.

Polycarbonate can improve the heat resistance and toughness of the material, while ABS makes the material easy to process. This PC-ABS material is also specially used for surface treatment, and provides favorable conditions for subsequent treatment through electroplating and metallization.

(B) Polymaker ™ PC-PBT: This blended polymer has both PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) good chemical resistance and the strength and toughness of polycarbonate. Whether it is in contact with hydrogen-carbon-based chemicals or working in sub-zero environments, this material performs well in extreme environments. It can maintain good toughness and natural ductile fracture behavior at low temperatures.

Polymaker ™ PC-PBT material is developed on the basis of Covestro ’s Makroblend® series products and is widely used in various industries. Compared with PC resins and PC-ABS compounds, PC-ABS materials have better corrosion resistance and can be used in the printing industry to block intermittent contact with fuels, oils, lubricants, and cleaning agents.

(3) PolyMax ™ PC-FR: Makrolon® series products from Covestro. FR stands for flame retardant and is the main feature of this polycarbonate-based compound. In the UL94 flame retardant test, this basic material can reach the V0 performance level, which is suitable for applications requiring approval of related materials. Therefore, PolyMax ™ PC-FR can be used in battery housings and as a motor bracket in aerospace and other industries. In the automotive and electrical and electronic industries, many professionals are familiar with this material.

PolyMax ™ materials introduced by Polymaker all contain nano-reinforcement technology, which can improve the fracture toughness of FR materials and produce flame-retardant filaments, so that they can still play a role in demanding applications. PolyMax ™ PC-FR is developed using Covestro ’s Makrolon® material, which has achieved a good balance between mechanical performance and safety, and has been used in the production of electronic motorcycles, aerospace parts and automobiles.
