SABIC expands NORYL™ SA9000 specialty resin production capacity in Asia to better support the rapidly growing demand for high-performance printed circuit board (PCB) products for 5G base stations and high-speed servers

Recently, SABIC announced plans to increase the production capacity of NORYL™ SA9000 specialty resins to better support the rapidly growing demand for high-performance printed circuit board (PCB) products for 5G base stations and high-speed servers.

Expected to be completed by the end of 2020, with production capacity doubling year-on-year

This production expansion will achieve growth again on the basis of the increase in production in 2019. It is expected that the production capacity in Asia will be doubled when the project is completed. By then, compared with 2018, the total production capacity of NORYL SA9000 resin in Asia will increase 10 times. This expansion will help high-performance copper clad laminate (CCL) producers to shorten the turnaround time on a global scale, thereby providing them with greater flexibility in meeting customers' needs for reducing turnaround time. In addition, the expansion plan also laid the foundation for future product development. At present, the expansion plan has been advanced in India as scheduled and is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

NORYL SA9000 resin is an important component of copper clad laminates. It is widely used in printed circuit boards in the global 5G infrastructure market. According to a related report by Mordor Intelligence, a market research and consulting company, from 2020 to 2025, the average annual compound growth rate of the 5G infrastructure market will reach 53%.

"SABIC will continue to invest in specialty materials to further promote the global deployment of 5G networks." said Scott Fisher, business director of SABIC's specialty materials division. "With the increasing demand for infrastructure, the wireless network industry is also facing high user expectations regarding speed, bandwidth, and low latency. SABIC has always been committed to providing customers with high-quality material solutions to help promote the development of 5G technology to a higher level. floor."

5G printed circuit board composition

For special printed circuit boards used in 5G network infrastructure, the required copper clad laminates must meet high transmission rates and low insertion loss under high frequency conditions. The high-performance resin NORYL SA9000 is a low molecular weight, bifunctional oligomer modified by polyphenylene ether. This resin creates convenient conditions for developers to balance heat resistance, dimensional stability, thermal expansion coefficient, and performance of higher layers in the production process of ultra-low loss copper clad laminates.

NORYL SA9000 resin provides more flexibility in formulation design for the existing copper clad laminate manufacturing process. This resin is soluble in traditional solvents such as toluene and methyl ethyl ketone, and can be compounded with a variety of thermosetting resin systems such as styrene, allyl, acrylic, maleimide, methacrylic and unsaturated polyester monomers and resins.

Other solutions for thermoset material processors

In addition to NORYL SA9000 resin, SABIC also supplies other resin products that will help thermoset material developers to research and develop suitable for 5G infrastructure. NORYL SA90 resin can provide excellent formula design flexibility for solvent-based epoxy resin systems. It can improve the dielectric properties of the material while achieving the perfect combination of heat resistance, high toughness and high dimensional stability. SABIC's BISDA dianhydride special resin can be used in specific polyimide formulations to improve dielectric properties and reduce water absorption.

Injection molding solutions for 5G infrastructure construction

Building a 5G mobile communication network with a transmission speed 10 times faster than a 4G network requires the application of professional infrastructure, including large-scale construction of small base stations. The key components that constitute traditional base station antennas and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, such as radome, antenna elements, antenna components, fasteners, screws, anchor bolts, small accessories, phase shifters and RF filter housings, etc. , Need to use high-functional materials to achieve a comprehensive balance of mechanical, physical and dielectric properties. SABIC has a broad portfolio of injection molding solutions, including ULTEM™ resin, NORYL resin, LNP™ THERMOCOMP™ compound and LEXAN™ EXL copolymer resin, etc., which can provide customized dielectric properties, weather resistance, lightweight and excellent design The degree of freedom helps optimize the performance of various materials in 5G infrastructure applications.
