SCHOTT Glass’s new standard electric compressor terminal based on metal sealing technology debuts at CIAAR

Shanghai, China, November 11, 2019-With the continued growth of China's new energy vehicle market, the international high-tech group SCHOTT will bring a series of new standard electric air-conditioning compressor terminals at the Shanghai International Automotive Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Exhibition ( CIAAR). The products on display include standard designs for 200-500V electric vehicles, solutions for 48V hybrid vehicle battery systems and 800V high-voltage fast charging applications. Visitors can go to booth 3D21 of Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center to communicate with experts from November 13-15.

Electric compressors must meet stringent requirements

The electric compressor is different from the traditional automobile air-conditioning compressor, and its internal motor is powered by the battery. Terminal packaging is one of their potential weaknesses. It must reliably transmit large amounts of energy while ensuring electrical insulation, but this is by no means an easy task because the risk of leakage at the power supply point is particularly high. At the same time, the harsh operating environment also poses challenges for electric compressors. The compressor terminals must be able to withstand high pressure, high temperature, high humidity, and vibration for an extended period of time without any leakage or loss of refrigerant.

Leading market electric compressor terminal

To meet the demanding requirements faced by electric compressor terminals, SCHOTT has developed market-leading components. SCHOTT uses the proven glass-to-metal sealing technology to manufacture compressor terminals. This technology has been successfully used for decades in a wide range of compressor applications and various harsh environments, such as automotive sensors, aerospace, and even medical applications. Use glass material as the insulator at the conductive joint of the compressor and ensure a complete hermetic seal. The joints manufactured in this way can provide excellent performance and durability, and are the result of cooperation between SCHOTT and electric compressors and automobile manufacturers around the world.

"We have more than 50 years of experience in this field. We have introduced efficient and advanced standard designs while optimizing costs, making us a leader in the emerging electric vehicle market," explained Akira Fujioka, SCHOTT R & D Manager.

Standard components that meet the requirements of new electric compressors

Through technical improvements, SCHOTT will bring a new series of standard products to the Shanghai CIAAR exhibition. This series of products are aimed at common 200-500V electric compressors of new energy vehicles. At this exhibition, SCHOTT will also exhibit advanced electric compressor terminals with extremely high insulation resistance, supporting high-voltage power supply (800V) and very suitable for fast charging technology of electric vehicles. This terminal can withstand high currents and supports the next-generation power system of 48 volts. According to the needs of various users and applications, the terminal design can be optimized to suit those compressors that use carbon dioxide coolant (R744) and other high pressure resistance.

In order to achieve reliable product quality and effectively prevent coolant leakage, SCHOTT always maintains high precision in the production process. SCHOTT uses special glass and rubber as materials, and in some cases ceramics to ensure that the terminals can provide the best electrical insulation performance under the harshest conditions.
