Siemens Group plans to cooperate with Swedish Powercell to develop marine fuel cell power systems

Siemens Group plans to promote marine fuel cell energy supply systems. Currently, Siemens Group is cooperating with Swedish battery manufacturer Powercell.

Offshore vessels will first try to use fuel cell-based energy supply systems.

The German Siemens Group plans to cooperate with Swedish battery manufacturer Powercell to assemble a fuel cell energy supply system for ships. On Tuesday, Siemens Group signed a cooperation agreement with Powercell in Hamburg, Germany. First try to assemble the fuel cell system on ferries and other maritime ships. In the future, it will be installed on maritime sightseeing ships and marine inspection ships.

From 2020, Germany will impose stricter environmental regulations on marine vessels. To this end, the Siemens Group is currently studying hybrid multi-fuel power systems, electric systems and LNG power systems using multiple fuels.

Siemens Group said that the use of battery systems as the ship's energy supply system is the first, and the next step is to use fuel cells, which can convert hydrogen into energy.
