Solvay’s Ixef® PARA helps ECA Medical Instruments develop next-generation Cervical-One disposable surgical instrument kit

Solvay, the world's leading specialty polymer manufacturer, announces that its high-performance Ixef® polyaramid (PARA) resin has helped ECA Medical Instruments develop a disposable cervical spine surgical instrument kit for primary and secondary cervical spine implantation Cervical-One ™.

This new Cervical-One ™ kit contains the full set of instruments needed for cervical spine and internal fixation surgery. It is robust and ergonomic, including a precision torque limiter and its drive. Not only does the semi-custom design reduce the cost of a variety of single devices, it also allows spinal implant OEMs to achieve highly cost-effective custom or private label device kit production.

Compared with reusable instruments, the ECA single-use instrument system can not only eliminate subsequent processing costs, improve operating room efficiency, simplify hospital and ASC inventory management, but also play an important role in eliminating the root cause of surgical site infection.

"When developing the Ceramic-One ™ platform, we needed an engineering polymer designed to withstand torque, shock and axial loads during operation," said James Schultz, executive vice president of sales and marketing at ECA Medical Instruments. "Ixef® PARA Can provide the robust mechanical properties needed to fix cervical vertebral plates, screws and intervertebral devices. We also need products that have the touch, weight and balance that surgeons expect. Solvay provided during the design process and is widely accepted by the entire industry Trusted collaboration and forward-looking compliance support have proven to be critical to reducing time to market for products. "

Ixef® PARA compounds not only provide metal-like strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability, but also provide excellent surface finish. Ixef® PARA is optimized to show no significant change in appearance or performance after high-energy gamma-ray sterilization, and provides a range of gamma-ray-resistant colors. After evaluation, Solvay compounds meet ISO 10993 deadlines for biocompatibility and are supported by the FDA's MAF.

"This successful partnership combines the strengths of the two industry leaders, ECA and Solvay, in their respective fields," said Jeff Hrivnak, Solvay Specialty Polymers Global Healthcare Business Manager. "We believe that with orthopedics Leading equipment manufacturers continue to advance the early transition to single-use systems, and with Solvay's combined strengths in many key related industry experiences, we can provide real value to existing and potential customers.
