Stratasys unveils 3D printed carbon fiber racing parts from Penske team

On September 12, 2018, Antarctic Bear learned from foreign media that Stratasys announced that the Penske team is expanding the use of additive manufacturing in the design and production environment. Additive manufacturing is used to promote automotive testing, prototypes and production parts. They use carbon fiber filling Advanced materials such as nylon 12.

Matt Gimbel, production manager of the Penske team, said: "While the racer focused on doing well during the season, the real race started a few weeks ago, with design and development in the workshop. The ability to deploy 3D printing early in the process allowed The Penske team has a huge advantage in producing better, more powerful and more aerodynamic racing components. "

The Penske team's 3D printing applications include wind tunnel development, composite tools, fixtures, engineering prototypes, and racing components. Using 3D printing to generate complex designs means reducing the iterative cycles between design and manufacturing for greater speed and flexibility. One of the latest applications of Stratasys carbon fiber is a lightweight mirror housing. The Penske team utilizes materials with high impact resistance and stiffness to better meet the requirements of motorsport environments focused on aerodynamic loads, vibrations and mechanical stress.

The Penske team uses Stratasys FDM 3D printers to make more powerful and aerodynamic racing parts to compete in NASCAR, INDYCAR and IMSA competitions.

Stratasys' industrial-grade Fortus 380mc carbon fiber version is priced at $ 70,000 in the United States and is suitable for customers developing tools and fixtures in the automotive, aerospace, orthopedic, prosthetic, and medical equipment industries. Stratasys will exhibit new carbon fiber 3D printers at IMTS 2018.

Stratasys Fortus 380mc carbon fiber edition and Stratasys F900 production 3D printers were broadcast live at IMTS 2018's Stratasys booth number 431600 (West Building). Attendees can also interact live with the No. 2 Penske NASCAR Cup Car fleet.
