Teknor Apex Introduces New Medalist® Compounds, New Medical Grade Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) for Peristaltic Pump Catheters

A series of new medical grade thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) for peristaltic pump catheters provide elasticity over a wide temperature range and can withstand the stresses of pump motion over time. Unlike silicone, these new elastomers can be welded and heat-sealed.

The new Medalist® compounds from Teknor Apex include transparent, translucent, and opaque grades for use in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, medical infusion systems, and dialysis machines (see table). Compared to other TPEs, Medalist TPE is less spalling (spattering refers to particles falling off the inner surface of the catheter due to repeated pressure and release during pump operation). The elasticity of these compounds allows the catheter to keep pace with the rapid movement of the pump, while its durability allows it to remain in shape and integrity over time.

Medalist compounds are low in extractables, are compatible with a wide range of chemicals, and can be sterilized by electron beam, gamma radiation, or ethylene oxide. Special grade materials are available for biopharmaceutical applications with extremely low temperature requirements.

“The new Medalist compounds for peristaltic pump applications are extremely durable and provide reliable performance over a wide range of operating temperatures,” said Ross van Royen, senior marketing manager for regulated products. Mature technology with excellent extrusion speed. "

Teknor Apex produces Medalist compounds through its ISO-13485 certified factories in the United States and Singapore. These new materials are manufactured from ingredients listed by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), are certified to ISO 10993-5 biocompatibility standards, and meet REACH SVHC requirements. They are free of DEHP (dioctyl phthalate) and other phthalates, BPA (bisphenol A) and latex. The standard grade does not contain ADM (animal-derived material).
