The big move of the EU’s graphene flagship plan: 20 million euros to establish a pilot line for 2D graphene-based electronic devices

Recently, the European Union's Graphene Flagship Plan announced an investment of 20 million euros to establish a 2D pilot line, which will provide graphene-based electronic devices on a pilot scale for European graphene companies, research institutions and universities.

As we all know, the European Union's Graphene Flagship Program has made a lot of achievements in the field of graphene electronic devices. The establishment of this pilot production line is a key step in the industrialization of communications technology. The Flagship Planning Committee proposes to establish a group covering the entire industry chain, including equipment manufacturers, raw material and material suppliers, and semiconductor manufacturers. The companies involved are Aixtron and Oxford Instruments (UK), imec (Belgium), AMO, iHP, Micro Resist Technology, Aixtron and Suss Microtech (Germany), Graphenea (Spain) and VTT (Finland), the production line held an online launch ceremony on October 8. "In the field of communication technology, wafer-level integration of graphene is a technology that must be overcome before industrialization. The establishment of a 2D pilot line will undoubtedly accelerate this process." Lilei Ye, Electronic Application Group of the Flagship Planning Committee, introduced.

The person in charge of the pilot line is the manager of Cedric Huyghebaert of imec. He mentioned: “Graphene and other two-dimensional material electronic devices have special properties, and many have exceeded the current devices. In order to expand the market of these new devices, it is necessary to Ensure that the manufacturing process matches the semiconductor industry standards." Professor Jari Kinaret, the head of the European Union's graphene device program, has high hopes for the pilot line project. He believes that the project has demonstrated the industrialization results of the flagship program to the world, and has successfully solved many thorny problems during the implementation of the project. The timetable for the 2D pilot line is very clear. The relevant process flow of the pilot line will be completed in the most advanced laboratory in Europe, involving companies such as AMO, iHP, imec, and VTT. The relevant processes will be fully completed by 2024. Greatly accelerate the application process of graphene optoelectronic devices in traditional manufacturing.

About the EU Graphene Device Program

The EU Graphene Flagship Program was launched by the European Commission in 2013. Together with the Human Brain Project, it is part of the Future and Emerging Technology (FET) Flagships flagship program initiated by the European Commission. The first one, their mission is to solve the major scientific and technological challenges of this era through long-term, multidisciplinary research and development efforts. The graphene flagship research project is one of the first technology flagship projects selected by the European Union, with a total investment of 1 billion euros.
