Volkswagen and NXP Semiconductors launch the world’s largest vehicle-road collaboration technology

NXP Semiconductors N.V. (Nasdaq: NXPI), the world ’s largest automotive semiconductor supplier, is pleased to announce that VW ’s next-generation Golf models will come standard with a life-saving RoadLINK V2X communication solution. The recently released 8th generation Golf is the first mass production model equipped with V2X in Europe, which has greatly promoted the deployment of the technology on European roads and in other parts of the world. This technology allows different brands of cars to communicate with each other, thereby preventing accidents, and the communication process does not require the support of cellular infrastructure.

RoadLINK® V2X communication solution

Dr. Johannes Neft, Head of Body Development, Volkswagen Brand, said: "Road safety is at the core of Volkswagen's commitment to customers. As a large manufacturer, we aim to be a pioneer in this field. Together with transportation infrastructure providers and other vehicle manufacturers The introduction of V2X is an important milestone in this direction of development. Volkswagen will provide this technology as a standard feature of this model without any additional costs for users to accelerate the popularity of V2X technology in Europe.

Torsten Lehman, senior vice president and general manager of driver assistance and infotainment at NXP, said: "Volkswagen has taken a bold step to take the lead in making V2X technology a reality in improving road safety. We are pleased to see RoadLink technology equipped in This generation of golf, Europe ’s most popular model, provides unprecedented safety. This technology was developed in cooperation with Cohda Wireless and has passed more than one million days of testing in various regions around the world. "

NXP and Volkswagen have been working closely to achieve high reliability and high performance of vehicles, while promoting the standardization of V2X communication technology, thereby solving network security and privacy protection.

V2X in Europe

V2X technology is a mature technology based on the Wi-Fi standard and has been tested for more than 10 years. Europe already has 1,000 kilometers of roads equipped with this Wi-Fi-based V2X technology, and plans to expand to 5,000 kilometers by the end of 2019. R & D, testing and standardization of its technology are carried out in a comprehensive global supplier and car manufacturer ecosystem to ensure reliability under diverse road and traffic conditions. Therefore, Wi-Fi has become the basis of European vehicle-to-vehicle communication and vehicle-road cooperative communication standards. Another advantage of this technology is that its availability is not affected by paid cellular services. Other cellular-based technologies under development can also be added to Wi-Fi-based V2X as a complement.

V2X communication will become an important part of advanced driver assistance systems, and it will gradually be applied to self-driving cars for workshop communication and communication with transportation infrastructure. The unique advantage of Wi-Fi-based V2X technology is that it can provide stable, low-latency and real-time communication functions for any car brand.

It enables perception and communication between cars and other vehicles, infrastructure such as traffic lights and road signs, and other road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.

This is a collaborative technology that can "make full use of" sensor data from cars that are equipped with the technology around each other, so that danger warnings are issued in time to prevent traffic accidents.

V2X technology is complementary to other ADAS sensing technologies, such as radar, lidar, and vision cameras.

It can help vehicles "see" a mile away and corner blind spots, providing early warning of obstacles, dangers and road conditions.

It can “see through” objects and provide more information than the driver's field of vision.

Its sensing function is not affected by severe weather conditions.

NXP offers the only mass-produced 5.9 GHz V2X system solution available today.
