Ludwigshafen, Germany/Solna, Sweden, December 3, 2020 – BASF and Swedish packaging manufacturer BillerudKorsnä have developed a unique family-compostable laminate paper for flexible packaging. This laminated paper consists of three basic parts: BillerudKorsnäs’ ConFlex® Silk paper, a seal layer made of certified BASF’s household compost, part of the bio-based biopolymer ecovio®, and the bonding of the paper to the seal layer BASF's water-based laminating adhesive Epotal® Eco 3675 X. The material of each part of the laminated paper has passed the food contact level certification, so it can be used to produce packaging with specific barrier properties, such as packaging for biscuits, ice cream, cereal bars and dairy products, as well as for freshly sold in supermarkets Wrapping paper for fish, meat and cheese. In addition, all the above-mentioned ingredients have obtained the official European home compostable certification. This laminated paper contains a large amount of renewable resources, and provides a new way for the disposal of multi-layer flexible packaging after use, that is, organic recycling.

The new home compostable solution has the same properties as traditional multi-layer packaging: puncture resistance, good printability, excellent heat sealability, and can be processed on standard packaging machines. Amir Pourirani, head of the global market for BASF Biopolymers, said: "Our original intention in designing this product was to use a 100% home-compostable certified material to create a paper laminate with good heat sealability. Some countries Driven by the legislation, a major social trend has emerged from plastic packaging to paper packaging. In addition, the existing multilayer flexible film materials are difficult to recycle, but their technical requirements still exist. BillerudKorsnäs is our ideal partner While retaining the properties of traditional laminate materials, the company has developed this paper-based home composting solution to provide more options for the disposal of packaging materials after use." According to "Plastics Strategy in European Circular Economy" 》The goal set out is that all plastic packaging should be recycled or reused by 2030.

Markus Saari, Business Development Manager of BillerudKorsnäs, said: “The certified BASF biopolymers and adhesives for household composting are ideal material compositions, helping the flexible packaging in our product series to take a new step towards exploring new sustainable solutions. This joint development means a transition to paper-based and compostable materials to replace traditional laminate materials used for food packaging. Like traditional packaging, it can meet hygiene and barrier requirements while maintaining its appearance and giving more More design space. In addition, it also has the decisive additional advantage that families can compost."

The sealable laminate is produced using a wet lamination process. The outer layer is made of BillerudKorsnäs home compostable kraft paper ConFlex®Silk, which has passed the Austrian TüV test and obtained the OK Compost Home certification. Kraft paper with a weight of 60 g/m2 has good printability and high strength. It is made of 100% virgin fiber. The inner sealing layer of the flexible packaging is made of a special ecovio® film from BASF, which has also been tested by TüV and certified by OK Compost Home.

The laminated paper is easy to seal, and both single extrusion and co-extrusion processes are applicable. BASF's water-based laminating adhesive Epotal® Eco 3675 X is used to bond sealant and kraft paper. This laminating adhesive is DIN Certco certified (according to DIN EN 13432, testing according to NF T 51-800) and can be used for household composting. Like other adhesives, it can also be processed using standard laminators, and it has excellent performance when used on various biodegradable substrates.
