Chinese automaker successfully develops heat resistant rare earth magnesium alloy automotive cylinder head

The Chinese Academy of Sciences Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry and FAW Group have recently successfully developed a heat-resistant rare earth magnesium alloy automobile cylinder head. The cylinder head is applied to the engine of a heavy truck, ending the history of no magnesium alloy material for domestic heavy truck parts. After testing, the performance of the cylinder head has reached or exceeded the level of similar foreign products.

Magnesium alloy has the advantages of light weight, low noise and excellent castability. It is known as "the 21st century green metal structural material" and an ideal substitute for aluminum alloy. It is widely used in transportation, manufacturing, 3C electronics, aerospace field. At present, the amount of magnesium alloy used in bicycles has been regarded as one of the signs of the advanced nature of automobiles. The amount of magnesium alloy used in bicycles in Europe is as high as 20 kg. There are more than 60 kinds of magnesium alloy auto parts being used and developed; there are more than 100 kinds of magnesium alloy auto parts being used and developed in North America.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences Changchun Yinghua has strong advantages in the research and development of rare earth nonferrous metal alloys. Together with FAW Group, they undertook the major project of the Northeast Revitalization Science and Technology Action Plan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, "High-Performance Rare-Earth Magnesium Alloy and Its Application in Automobiles". After hard work, they successively overcome the technical difficulties of rare earth strengthening phase and dispersion in rare earth magnesium alloys, solved the technical difficulties of rare earth magnesium alloy die-casting and smelting, and applied the rare earth magnesium intermediate alloy independently developed by Yinghua Institute, which was successfully manufactured for the first time in China Rare earth magnesium application alloy with elongation greater than 5%. On this basis, they also installed a 1400-ton magnesium alloy die-casting machine, further optimized the technical processes such as melting and die-casting in trial production, solved quality control problems in mass production, greatly improved the quality of the alloy, and promoted its industry. Process. At present, they have mass produced 15,072 rare earth magnesium alloy cylinder heads for heavy trucks, and the product qualification rate is over 90%.

In order to further accelerate the industrialization process of rare earth magnesium alloys, the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry is constructing an industrialization demonstration base of 100 tons of rare earth magnesium intermediate alloys and 1,000 tons of rare earth magnesium alloys annually. At present, the first phase of the base has been completed, and most of the production equipment is in place. Changchun Yinghua Institute plans to build the base into a world-class rare earth magnesium alloy industrialization base in about three years.
